Sheet Music
|
Hello! Before you start playing this sheet music, I would like to say a few words about the creative process and composition. I hope these words will help you learn and enjoy playing my music and most importantly, give you the freedom to make the music personal and enjoyable. It is my wish that these thoughts help you capture the spirit of the piece, where the heart of true music abides.
First, let me give you permission to change the music. You do not need to play every note as written! Vary the tempo, slow it down or speed it up as you like. Unlike Classical Music, which should be played note for note, this music is dynamic and fluid and can be altered to fit your playing ability. That is what I do when I compose a song. Experimenting and improvising can take the song in different directions, and the song “tells me” when I’ve chosen the right path. If what I hear is too difficult for to play, I change it! (ps – I use daily practice to expand my technical abilities to decrease those limiting factors as much as possible.)
I receive emails from pianists who have been taught to play a piece exactly as it is written. They struggle with the songs, trying to play it note for note or end up just skipping the song entirely. I want you to have fun with these songs, feel free to make the songs yours. Here are a few examples of what I’m talking about:
Chords: due to hand size, if you cannot physically play either the reach of the chord or include all the notes in the chord as written. - - you can drop one of the notes in the chord, or play single notes instead of octaves.
Key: Too many sharps or flats scare you away from even attempting a particular song? Start with learning and practicing the scales in that key. Learn the major chords. This will help tremendously in feeling comfortable with the song. Don’t turn that page when you see more than three sharps!
Speed: I’ve been practicing and working specifically to increase my ability to play passages quickly – especially with the left hand. This takes time and diligent practice. If you’re not there yet, slow down! As the song becomes more familiar to your hands, it will naturally gain speed.
I hope this helps in your approach to my sheet music. These songs were meant to be enjoyed - so play on and have fun!
